How Does It Work?

The premise of tapping is that many of the negative feelings and fears which people experience in everyday life are rooted in the part of the brain called the amygdala, which is part of our emotional system and one of the most evolutionarily ancient structures in our brain.

This structure is the seat of our “fight, flight, or freeze” instincts in response to danger. The amygdala sends signals to the rest of the brain and body to focus on the threat and prepare to respond to it, which of course was crucial to our survival as individuals and as a species over the course of evolutionary history.

In a modern context, however, many of the things which we unconsciously perceive as dangers are actually much less of a threat to our well being than the stress and fear caused by our response to them.

The Tapping Solution combines this finding from neuroscience with the ancient Chinese concept of energy pathways in your body which converge in points called meridians, the same points which are the focus of acupuncture and similar traditional healing methods.

Tapping on these meridians with your fingertips sends a calming signal to the amygdala, and focusing on the negative thought, feeling, or pain that you want to address is supposed to engage and direct the flow of energy.

There is understandably some scepticism and criticism surrounding the concept of tapping. Until recently the main ‘evidence’ to support its effectiveness was virtually entirely anecdotal, but some scientific studies have been conducted examining some of the concepts and claims which underlie The Tapping Solution.

Links to these studies and research are provided on the website at www.thetappingsolution.com/science-research/.

Overall, it seems that while there is definitely science behind the role of the amygdala in stress and anxiety, and even research which supports the claim that tapping can produce a soothing and calming response, the concept of “directing the flow of energy” or is still lacking in scientific backing.

However, such concepts have long been at the heart of ancient healing traditions, especially in the east.

Online Reviews/Complaints:

Somewhat surprisingly given the controversial nature of the claims made, online reviews of the Tapping Solution books are largely positive. People find them easy to read and practical, and report feeling results in areas from weight-loss to deep seated phobias.

However it does seem that people not already inclined to accept the ideas which tapping is based on are unlikely to buy and read the books or use the products, so some confirmation bias may be at play.
